Jeff Beck è morto improvvisamente all’età di 78 anni. È stato confermato in una dichiarazione tramite i profili social dell’artista: “A nome della sua famiglia, è con profonda tristezza che condividiamo la notizia della morte di Jeff Beck”, si legge nella dichiarazione. “Dopo aver contratto improvvisamente la meningite batterica, è morto serenamente ieri. La sua famiglia chiede privacy mentre elaborano questa tremenda perdita”.

Beck è diventato famoso con gli Yardbirds, a cui si è unito nel 1965, in sostituzione di Eric Clapton condividendo il ruolo di prima chitarra con Jimmy Page. Nella band ci ha suonato solamente per 18-20 mesi e dopo aver realizzato l’album Roger The Engineer (1966) venne licenziato. Subito dopo ha formato il Jeff Beck Group con Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood. Ha pubblicato quattro album: Truth (1968), Beck-Ola (1969), Rough And Ready (1971) e Jeff Beck Group (1972) – prima di sciogliersi all’inizio degli anni ’70. Tuttavia, Stewart e Wood erano presenti solo per i primi due dischi e lasciarono la band nel 1970 per entrare nei Faces – il progetto nato dagli Small Faces dopo l’addio del cantante Steve Marriott.
Nel 1975 è uscito il suo primo album solista Blow By Blow con il produttore dei Beatles, George Martin, arrivando nella Top 10 negli Stati Uniti. in band come Screaming Lord Sutch And The Savages e Nightshift. Gli anni successivi lo hanno visto collaborare con tutti, da Nile Rodgers a Mick Jagger, apparendo nell’album solista di quest’ultimo del 1987 “Primitive Cool”. Da allora, ha lavorato con Roger Waters, Jon Bon Jovi, Imogen Heap e Ozzy Osbourne. Nel 2013 ha intrapreso un tour congiunto con Brian Wilson dei Beach Boys con cui aveva programmato di realizzare un album, ma che non si è mai concretizzato. Nel 2019, Beck e Stewart si sono riuniti sul palco dell’Hollywood Bowl per quello che è stato definito “il loro concerto più approfondito in oltre 35 anni.
Beck è spesso definito uno dei più grandi chitarristi di tutti i tempi. Aveva assicurato le sue dita e pollici per 7 milioni di sterline.Ha contribuito a plasmare la musica per chitarra negli anni ’60 e oltre, lasciando il segno su jazz-rock e fusion, rock’n’roll e altro ancora. Tanti artisti stanno ricordando sui social il chitarrista: da Johnny Marr a Ozzy Osbourne fino a Mick Jagger, Joe Satriani, Brian Wilson, Billy Corgan, Ronnie Wood e tantissimi altri.
